Obituary of James Leonard Thompson
Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our devoted dad, Leonard Thompson. Dad was predeceased by his wife Erna (nee Klarer) and his grandson Tyson Sievert; and leaves his mark of integrity and caring with his 6 children, Claire (Lorne) Whippler, Jim (Linda) Thompson, Pat (Russ) Pederson, Jackie (Dale) Sievert, Kelly (Tim) Krupp, Don (Cari Watson) Thompson, his 18 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
Leonard was born & raised on the Thompson farm north of Southey, SK. In his youth he loved to play baseball, play cards, attend dances and go to town to be with his buddies. He completed his Grade 12 education in Southey having to ride his bike 8 miles in & 8 miles back from the farm everyday for his high school years.
Leonard enlisted in the Canadian Army and became a Soldier with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, serving in Europe from July 1943 to September 1945. We were very proud when he received a letter and medal from the Ambassador of France in 2018; awarding him the rank of “Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour”, in recognition of his and his compatriots’ personal involvement in the combat (D Day) which led to the liberation of France during World War II.
We will remember our Dad as a humble person with a terrific memory, remembering details about everyone he ran across, because he always listened. He loved to tease the grandkids and genuinely cared about them all. We will all miss you very much Dad.
A celebration for him will be held in Spring; a notification will be placed in the Leader Post.
