Obituary of Luis John Mogentale
Luis John Mogentale of Regina, SK passed away peacefully on September 1, 2020 at the age of 91 years, one week after the passing of Priscilla, his beloved wife of 67 years. “Wherever you go I will follow.”
Luis is survived by his children, Cathy (Terry) McKay of Regina, Celine (Darel) Kilford of Fall River NS, Maureen Mogentale of Regina, Jane (Arnie) Maier of Regina and Jerome (Michelle) Mogentale of Regina; grandchildren Allison McKay (Jon Selinger), Amanda Mckay (Taylor Stevens), Alex McKay, Jessica Kilford, Kristine Kilford, Sarah Kilford, Samantha Schryer, Thomas Maier, Danielle Maier, Michael Mogentale and Olivia Mogentale; great grandchildren Connor and Clara Selinger; sisters Lucille McEachern and Dolores (Wes) McCurdy and brother Joe (Joan) Mogentale as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family
Luis was born May 25, 1929 on the family farm in Sinnett, SK. His dad said he was the last good thing to happen before the Crash. Dad left school in grade 11 to help run the family farm. He regretted not finishing school and later took correspondence and night classes and completed his grade 12 in 1967.
He met Priscilla, and they married in 1953. Together they raised six children while living in Sinnett, Watson, Weyburn and finally moving to Regina in 1975. Luis started working for the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in 1955 and retired in 1990 after a 35-year career. During this career he started on a paint crew and rose through the ranks to construction crew, construction crew foreman, district foreman and District Superintendent, a position he held until retirement. The Wheat Pool was the source of many friendships that were an important part of our family life.
In his forties, Luis obtained his private pilot licence and enjoyed many years flying around Saskatchewan. In his sixties he took up downhill skiing and spent many winters skiing with his grandchildren. Luis also enjoyed travelling in the motorhome and trips overseas, camping with his grandchildren, gardening, furniture refinishing and playing bridge and cribbage.
He was an active member of several organizations including The NDP, The Oldtimers Club, The Good Sams, and the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Salvation Army and was very active in the parish community.
In retirement, and in keeping with their faith, Luis and Priscilla completed the Lay Ministry Program and spent many years volunteering with Pastoral Care at the Pasqua Hospital and Lay Ministry Services at Care Homes.
Luis kept lifelong friendships and connections and will be sadly missed by all who hold him dear.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Bentley and College Park 2 for their care of our father; especially College Park 2 for the above and beyond care for dad during these past few weeks.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Luis’ memory to The Regina Food Bank, The Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
A Private Mass will be held on Tuesday, September 8, 2020 at 10:00 a.m. and a livestream will be held via YouTube below.
In Loving Memory
