Sending my condolences to Phil, Gene, Kay(family) and Mrs. Urschel. I was a childhood friend of Phil’s and later Gene, and spent considerable time at the Urschel’s growing up.
Always welcomed, I saw the devotion and sacrifice both Mr. & Mrs. Urschel made for their children and share many memories mentioned by our friend Randy in an earlier tribute.
I can speak strongly to Mr. Urschel’s character as I consider him as one of my mentors in life. Although soft spoken and quiet, Mr. Urschel was intelligent , informed and held strong moral convictions with his faith and family. The time and commitment the Urschel’s invested in caring for their children and grandchildren reflects the love and priority of family that they cherished daily.
Raising two elite athletes is a major time commitment for any family, but Mr. Urschel never missed a game for either and many times offered his vehicle to transport the hooligans to their football games.
Through Mr. Urschel I learned commitment, sacrifice, patience and more importantly - Fair Play. He was smart, researched, well read and his perspective was most reasonable, except when it came to government fiscal management or policy and of course his favourite sports team! I was able to enjoy and partake in many of these conversations and remember them fondly.
Mr. Urschel was a gentleman and the “Best of the Best”.
God Speed!

I stopped by the house the other day and it felt very strange to know that grandpa wasn't there on the couch, watching out the window. He is the only grandpa that I've had a chance to get to know which is a very special thing. He and I both enjoyed the arts especially painting and I remember as a child feeling so special when he took the time to sit and paint with me. This shared interest always made me feel a connection to him. Throughout my childhood, he made sure I had the best quality paint brushes and art supplies. I always looked forward to opening these thoughtful gifts on my birthdays. Though he was unwell for many years, when I think of him, I remember him as healthy- bursting in kitchen doors after a brisk walk with the dog. I remember him as active, tidy, particular and smart. He was an avid reader, lover of sports and politically engaged. I remember him raging at the tv and muttering to himself about issues he felt particularly passionate about. As a child, I felt a combination of admiration and intimidation of my grandpa. I was acutely aware that the endless energy, noise and motion of children was sometimes tiring or irritating to him and the older I get, the more I understand how he felt! However, when he became a great grandpa and as he became more ill, I saw a softening in him and he welcomed the noise and activity from the great grandchildren. My sister is right, he lit up when he saw them and his eyes shone. He was more playful too and enjoyed tickling toes and listening intently to all of their endless songs and stories. I feel thankful to have known both of these versions of him. My husband Mark, always enjoyed the engaging conversation he got to have with grandpa. My girls remember only his kindness and warmth towards them. My grandpa was kind to me and interested in my life. These are great gifts. We are thankful he is resting peacefully.

My Grandpa
My Grandpa grew up in a huge, poor family. Was known for running around town barefoot. Shared a bed with his younger brother until he moved out and got married! In his late 20s, he heard the news that my Grandma had returned to Canada. Most men would steer clear of a young widow, with two toddlers...but he literally ran TOWARDS the chaos! I often wonder what was going through his mind...
He was a proud Riders fan, and staunchly defended the city of Regina if anyone argued that Saskatoon was better, haha!
I loved going for walks with him, always a flat cap smartly upon his head. He loved reading Charles Dickens, had a soft spot for dogs and cats, and was accomplished at wood carving horses!
In their retirement years, Grandpa and Grandma found pleasure in working together teaching ESL classes. I had the chance to join them for a potluck on one occassion, and a student commented on how much I resembled my grandpa (we shared a chuckle, knowing full well that was biologically impossible, but I could tell he was pleased with the compliment anyhow)
Every year, Grandpa would carefully pick out a book for my birthday, loved to order from the Lee Valley catalogue, never missed a piano recital or musical, and meticulously edited my university English papers for me!
One thing that always brought him JOY was watching his great grandbabies. His face would transform from tired, to bright eyes and wide smiles, sitting upright and leaning attentively forward, soaking in every little interaction. He would chastise me when I disciplined my kids for being too loud or wild, which I thought was hilarious!
At their 50th wedding anniversary celebration, my husband Tim, sang an old hymn and my grandpa, with tears in his eyes, was visibly overcome. Through so much tragedy and hardships, where was God? His life was far from perfect, yet somehow my Grandpa still clung to the Hope of Jesus found in his favourite hymn.
I'm having a bit of a hard time believing he is actually gone from this earth. I will always miss him. Yet I take great comfort in knowing he is now resting peacefully in God's presence. His burdens laid at Jesus feet.
To Grandma, Uncle Phil, Uncle Gene, and Mom- I am praying for you and wish I could hug you tight❤️

Great granddaughters, Vera and Gracie, lovingly remember great grandpa smiling at them from the window and from the green couch. He always lit up when they were around.

I want to honour my Dad with these memories. We are proud of you because you served Christ through your Sunday school teaching and ESL classes for many years. The preparation you did was incredible. I remember seeing the whole dining room table covered with your work. The woodworking and skill building you did in your job with challenged teens was remarkable. You were the only one of your siblings to attend university, mostly through night school while working and being a Dad. This meant we had to go to university as well! We are proud of your commitment to excellence in your work and beautiful woodcarving. Your love of classical music, hymns and literature has influenced me, your grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
When I was little we would go to sleep to the sound of your records. Your sincere sense of social justice impacted me for life. You sacrificed and were generous to your family. I loved to see your smile reserved for our little ones and favourite pets. I marveled at your strong will power but grieved all your suffering. I tried very hard to understand you. I firmly believe God sent you to Mom, Gene and I sixty years ago. It is a beautiful story that the four of us share. I am thankful too for our brother Phil. You are free now Dad. Love Kayleen

I have many fond memories of my childhood in Lorne’s basement or out in the park next door. Lorne was a very attentive father and he was kind to purchase that pool table which became the focal point of many, many fun times for neighbourhood youth. I don’t think Lorne ever missed a sports event that Gene or Phil played in. I remember that nice stereo that he had to play classical music – his beloved Deutsche Grammophon (DGG) the German classical music record label that later became the home of Bowie, the Stones and Kiss. He was a kind and thoughtful person with a profound sense of charity and a deep faith. He was always so present in the life of his children and I was blessed to know him in my teenage years.
