Obituary of Ken Chekay

In loving memory of Ken, who passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 8, 2023 with family by his side.

Ken was the best Husband, Father, Grandfather and Great-Grandfather that anyone could hope for. He was born and grew up in the Assiniboia area on the family farm, where he attended Leeville School through Grade 10. Ken completed Grade 11 and 12 at the Assiniboia Highschool. Farming was his passion. He continued to farm throughout his life. He retired from the Government of Canada (Consumer and Corporate Affairs) as a District Manager of Electricity and Gas Inspections in 1994 after 33 years of service but continued to farm after retirement. When the family farm sold, Ken continued farming with his youngest son Kevin just outside of Regina.

Ken met his wife, Louise, at a dance in Regina in 1959 and it was love at first sight. They got married on July 29, 1961. Together, they had three children – Alan, Lori and Kevin. Ken took his family camping every year, and through the years travelled the world with his wife and children to Disney World, the Bahamas, and many more. Ken enjoyed travelling well into his retirement and never passed up the opportunity for a rum or glass of red wine.

Ken was very involved and supportive of his family and attended many hockey games, baseball games, and dance recitals for his children and grandchildren. Ken loved unconditionally and loved spending time with his family and friends.

Ken was predeceased by his wife Louise Chekay (1991); daughter Carrie Chekay (1971) in infancy; granddaughter Breanna Chekay (2020); parents Stan (1982) and Olive (2003) Chekay; sister Janice Huber (2020); mother and father in-law Helen (1982) and Chris (1985) Eberle; and many beloved brother and sister in law’s.

He is survived by his children, Alan (Helen) Chekay, Lori (Darren) Shalovelo, and Kevin (Catherine) Chekay; grandchildren, Treven Shalovelo (Katie), Teagan Shalovelo, Danielle Chekay (Mike), Richelle Chekay (Dexter), Kristen Chekay (Jordan), and Matthew Chekay; great-grandchildren, Aislinn Pittman, Huxley Pittman, and Mason Shalovelo; special friend, Gladys Altwasser; sister Joan (Edwin) Eberle; brother Doug (Darlene) Chekay; as well as brothers and sisters in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Ken’s Life will take place at a later date.
