Obituary of Edie Cubbon

Edie Cubbon (April 22, 1941 - April 27, 2024)
Edie was born in Wapella, SK, as the second of four daughters to John and Eleanora McDonald.  Edie is survived by her husband and best friend of 64 years, Barrie; children Laird (Darlene) Cubbon and Jane Carswell (Rick); and her four grandchildren Aiden and Aaron Cubbon and Rain and Alexa Carswell.  She is also survived by her two younger sisters Lesley Oliver and Mickey McDonald; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.  Edie was predeceased by her older sister Margi Sheldon.

In her teenage years, Edie spent summers working in the kitchen at the Chalet at Kenosee Lake where she met Barrie.   In 1958, the McDonald family moved from Wawota to Winnipeg where Edie worked for Hudson Bay House as a clerk. Barrie followed and continued to court Edie in the big city.

Edie and Barrie were married on Friday, May 27, 1960 with good friends Don and Faye Chase as witnesses.  They honeymooned for the weekend in Minot, ND on the way to Regina where on Monday, May 30 Barrie started a new business.  They often remarked that such a drastic move is not recommended. Do one or another but not all three – marry, move, or start a new biz.

Edie was a critical partner behind the scenes for Barrie Cubbon Advertising Ltd as well as other businesses they eventually owned (Buffalo Lookout Campground, Canadian House of Crafts and Bantry Antiques).

During the early years of their marriage Edie perfected numerous recipes using her favourite ingredient - Klik - while working in the raw fur department at the Hudson Bay Company sorting furs. Once Barrie Cubbon Advertising was up and running, they purchased their first home on Turgeon Crescent where they raised their two children.  Edie was very involved in the PTA,  volunteered with Girl Guides and attended hundreds of Laird’s hockey games.  She became involved with Friends of the MacKenzie ArtGallery and volunteered in the Gallery Shop and many Teas at Government House.

Over the years she and Barrie travelled extensively making many repeat trips to favourite destinations such as Mexico and Ireland in addition to many trips to Walt Disney World with the kids. They drove. She navigated and he steered.

Edie was a lover of music and could frequently be heard whistling Jerry Lee Lewis or Elvis tunes and was a seasons-ticket holder to the Globe Theatre.  She was a fierce competitor in rounds of trivia games with her coffee group and knew no equal on the Entertainment questions in Trivial Pursuit.

Edie was a loyal friend, keeping in touch with old friends from her teenage years and early years in Regina while making and keeping new friends throughout her life.  She was known to have a wonderful sense of humour and was a kind and loving wife, mother, and grandmother who will be missed dearly by all who knew her.
