I was devastated to learn about Birkti's passing and am thinking of all the family members at this very sad time. I first met Birkti as she studied at the former SIAST ... English as an Additional language/ Basic Education and then she completed the Continuing Care Aid program. We met through library services as she often came to the library and we got to know each other and later I was a 'conversation partner' with her so that she could practice her English.
We became friends and went out for meals / to movies/ shopping and for walks and to spend time in the community.
I was so very proud of her when she completed her programs of study and even got her Driver's licence!!!
Her family have always shown love and support for her and been there to help and encourage her.
I will always cherish the times that I spent with her 'learning' and she gave me a few gifts when she went home to visit her mother and other relatives and I will always keep these items as a memory of her. So sad and sorrowful to have to say goodbye to a wonderful young woman.
