I’m so sorry to hear we’ve lost Doug Mader. He was an inspirational teacher who left a mark me. The fact that his grade 11 and 12 physics courses were his own handiwork, and that they were so good, made a strong impression on me. I’m grateful to have had a teacher who was so original, knowledgeable, and daring. He will be missed.

Doug leaves the memory of a quick broad smile conveying kindness, inquisitiveness, encouragement, and sincerity. My conversations with him could veer off in any direction when we had the time: he would discuss and ponder everything.
Thank you for humouring me, Doug, and your open-minded acceptance.

Doug and I were quite young when my parents moved to Hudson Bay Junction but that provided a very nice
Buddy of near my age. We found quite a few out door things to do together. One was foot ball but we played it with other guys without protection. The town doctor stopped it when one guy hurt his shoulder. At other times we took some others into the woods armed with long sharp pikes, uh, just in case we had to drive off any bear. Douglas and I tried to build a cabin in the woods but we only got to two feet to the project. Other games followed.

Gradually my buddy Douglas and I got to to our Grade ten together. We decided to print a school news paper and entitled it "Chanticleer."
Two of our teachers Mr. Barlow and Mr. Baumer made a badminton for us and we got good enough to go into a badminton tournament. Doug was always better and won.

Goudlas and I interacted as if we were born brothers. One time I came back from Cadet training in a Camp
and there was a Parade. I had be given a state of Sargent so I led my other Cadets. Gouglas had the trombone as I led the Cadets. At the end of the parade and I asked him if I lead the Cadets well. He smiled and nicely said. "Uh Mike" not really."

Douglas Mader and I were close in age. This made it to play when my parents and I transferred to Hudson Bay Junction and leave my friends in Marynam Alberta. We played in the grass in the back yard of our house. We did some things like wrestling. Doug always out wrestled me. I tried to be "my hero Charles Atlas,"
We also went for hikes into the woods and tried to build a cabin but soon gave it up because it turned out to be no higher than two feet. We played foot ball with our other friends without pads. Played hard ball with them.

Doug had a strong environmental ethic, as evidenced by the conservation house he and Barb built in Lumsden about 40 years ago. He served for many years as a member-at-large with the Lumsden Valley Community Association (LuVCA), a local conservation group. He always said: "Hydrogen is the future energy source we should pursue. That has started!" Rest in peace!

Memories of Doug
I am so grateful to be able to share my memories of Doug, how he was knowledgeable, supportive and a valuable member of many communities. I think I first met Doug when we both volunteered to be on the Town of Lumsden Tree Committee. Many trees were planted and Doug ultimately developed a small nursery in our community of Lumsden. Both Doug and I were senior science teachers and his support and expertise in the hay day of Lumsden High Science Fairs was very much appreciated. Doug was a leader in the science community after he retired from Thom, particularly with respect to environmental science and taking action. He imparted on me a deep understanding of how different greenhouse gases absorb different wavelengths of energy and contribute to trapping, warming and subsequently climate change, perhaps 30 years ago, just as all the buzz about climate change was starting. After that Doug became a student and then an expert on different forms of non-carbon emitting energy. He shared that knowledge and the books he read with me and of course others who were interested. Doug helped with the School Grounds Project which re-established prairie grasses, flowers, shrubs and trees on vacant land beside Lumsden High School. Doug volunteered and taught my students how to transplant trees, moving them from the nursery and establishing them in the School Grounds Project.
Doug served on Town Council with me and we developed a working group, Sewage 101, to learn more about sewage treatment so we could make knowledgeable decisions regarding the best path forward for our community. In addition to researching sewage treatment, we increased our knowledge of renewable energy which could reduce the carbon footprint of the options available to us which used a great deal of electrical energy.
Doug had a passion for the outdoors, habitat protection, and conservation for our shared larger community, the grasslands of southern Saskatchewan. I believe this grew out of or alongside his love of pheasant hunting in the south. It resulted in his support for organizations trying to protect native prairie, ultimately the Nature Conservancy of Canada.
The science teaching community was better for the part he played. Those concerned about the environment benefited from his expertise and knowledge and commitment. The community of Lumsden benefitted from Barb and Doug having made this their home. I benefited from his support over the years. Thanks Doug.

Barb:
I, like everyone who had ever met him, was saddened to learn of Doug's passing. From the moment that I came on staff at Thom in 1978 until now, Doug has always served as a mentor, an advisor, a trusted friend and, above all, a fine and distinguished teacher. Doug and Dobber and Clewsie and the Big Guy and J. D. and Mr. Hawrylak himself together forged a collegiate that I still feel was the finest in our city. I look back fondly at all the far-reaching discussions shared going to or home from provincial teachers' tourneys, and those in the staffroom. He will be missed.

Doug married Barbara Vance, who was the daughter of long time family friends of my parents. Many family occasions were shared and we got to know Doug well. Never did he ever enter our home or presence without twinkling eyes, a huge smile and his trademark hearty laugh. One could not help but be happy around him. While sporting a cast on one of his legs, he gave an impromptu golf swing lesson to our mother, who took a full practice swing and soundly hit him on his good leg. Doug put on a smile, downplayed the pain and assured her all was fine!! This incident was so typical of the kind man he was. Fly high, Doug! We will miss you!

Mr. Mader was a one of the most loved teachers at Thom Collegiate. But I remember him most strolling down the fairways at the Royal Regina with Barbara with the biggest smile on his face. He was passionate about the game, his students, friends and family. RIP Mr. Mader.

I had heard about what an incredible teacher Doug was to many students at Thom, and he along with Barbara were solid pillars of the school for many years. I am truly sorry to hear about his passing and my thoughts are with Barbara - I had the good fortune of having her for an amazing teacher, a solid Mader teacher trademark from both Doug and Barbara.

Dear Barb,
What else can be said after this well written and touching obituary. Doug was a teacher that went the extra mile. Personally I remember how he tutored me in grade 12 while I was off school for a month. He was the only teacher that used the curve marking system which helped me passed! Fast forward 16 years after that and he taught my son. Kelly was sad when I told him about Doug’s death and said that he was his all time favourite teacher. He was a favourite teacher, person, friend to many! Barb, take care of yourself as you grieve the loss of your best friend whom you met at Thom back in 1967. BOTH of you were my favourite teachers. May Doug Rest In Peace.

Mr. Mader was my high school physics teacher in the early 90s - and boy, was he one of my favourites. He taught me things that I still use today - and that I teach my kids about the way the world uses physics. Just a small way that his legacy lives on.

Mr. Mader was my physics teacher at Thom Collegiate in 1972. I remember he showed up in class this semester in a wheelchair, with his leg straight out and casted from a skiing accident. He probably could have stayed home sick, but came to teach every day anyway. Mr. Mader was not only knowledgeable about physics, but also so many topics unrelated to physics, and if we could get him side-tracked from the course material, we would learn so much about so many things. I specifically remember his theory on UFO's. Mr. Mader was one of those special people who leave a life-long impression.
