Obituary of Weini Ghide
With the sudden passing of Weini Ghide on Saturday, November 30, 2024, it is with great sadness that we say goodbye. Weini is now resting with her beloved parents, mother Nigisty Ghebrendrias and father Ghide Sereke. Weini is survived by her husband Gaim Tumzzghi; daughters Sami, Adiam and Semhar Tumzzghi; and grandchildren, Nadia, Maksym, Naheir and Yakob.
Weini was born in 1959 in Hadish Adi, Eritrea. Mid-way through high school Weini went off to join the ELF (Eritrean Liberation Front). Weini served in the military for years before immigrating to Sudan. In 1978, Weini moved to Italy to join her mother and once there she met the love of her life, Gaim. Deciding to move overseas as a family, they immigrated to Canada and built a beautiful life surrounded by many family and friends.
While getting settled in Regina, Weini started working at the University of Regina 35 years ago and was there until her last days. Her life was also honored there with a flag flown at half-mast on Wednesday, December 4, 2024.
Everyone would say if you are in Regina, Weini is your go to person. Weini could help with almost anything. Weini loved going shopping and had expensive taste. Most of the time she ended up gifting them. Weini lived to bring people together and make them laugh with her hilarious stories. Weini was truly an incredible storyteller. She was famous for her "elelelelele" at every gathering. Entertaining people was one of her biggest joys. Weini absolutely loved to have company, she welcomed everyone in her home with open arms and loved them to leave with full stomachs. In Mama Weini’s eyes, a full house was a happy house.
Weini sponsored family, friends and even strangers to Canada to have a new beginning and she wanted to help make people's transition to a new life in a new country easier. She would help find jobs, stood by expecting mothers in the delivery room, and she loved giving gifts to children. But most importantly she gave hope, advice, and words of encouragement, all from her big heart.
Weini also took pride in contributing to the building of the Eritrean Orthodox Church. A church where she and others could practice their faith and feel at home surrounded by their religion, their language and their culture. A church to enjoy for many, many generations to come.
Let us remember her together.
A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at St. Mary’s Eritrean Orthodox Tewehado Church, 4205 7th Ave., Regina, SK. For those unable to attend, a livestream may be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/live/3TbL7bZXm4A?si=PCEh_i6NTSbjHyb_.
