Obituary of David Alexander Ewart
Dave passed away quietly on March 14, 2019 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Pasqua Hospital from a severe bout of pneumonia at the age of 95 years. He was predeceased by his parents David and Margaret (Sinclair); in-laws Clarence and Lorna Ashworth; his brothers Sinclair (Evelyn) and Jack and a sister Sylvia (Bill) Coghill. Dave will be sadly missed by his beloved wife of 58 years Bertie; his adored son Garry (Lorri); grandchildren David and Thomas; many nieces and nephews and other extended family.
Dave was born in 1923 in rural south SK and attended school at Advance School and in Assiniboia during the Great Depression. During World War II, Dave joined the army when he was just 17 years old. He served with the Calgary Tank Regiment, First Armored Brigade as a wireless operator/loader in a tank on the front lines of Sicily, Italy and North West Europe for 4 years. On return to Canada, he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture in Saskatoon. Over the years, he worked with the Inter-provincial pipeline, as a milk recorder with the Provincial Dairy Division, with the Lands Branch (spending 4 years at Carrot River with the Veterans Cooperative Settlement) and the Dairy Division (becoming Dairy Supervisor of Herd Improvement and then Provincial Dairy Administrator). He also volunteered as the Secretary Treasurer of the Saskatchewan Dairy Association for 25 years and served as President among other positions with the Royal Canadian Legion for more than 30 years. Dave married Bertie November 26, 1960 in a quiet ceremony and resided in Regina. Despite the trauma he experienced during the war, Dave would share his memories during many Remembrance Day events and for other historical undertakings like the Memory Project. Dave is remembered for his interesting sense of humor and his love for playing jokes on his family and friends. During his lifetime, Dave enjoyed playing baseball, curling and golf, doing the morning puzzles and puttering around on the acreage in McLean. Dave’s family would like to thank Dr. Van Heerden, Dr. Vaseghi, Dr. Suderman, Home Care and Seniors House Call Program and the many doctors and nurses that helped Dave through his last few weeks in the Pasqua Hospital for their excellent care. At Dave’s request, there will be no funeral. His ashes will be placed in the Field of Honour at Riverside Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Dave’s memory to the Royal Canadian Legion #001, 1820 Cornwall St., Regina, S4P 2K2.
In Loving Memory
David Ewart
